Neil Armstrong eighth-graders win special award at Intel science expo

Honored - Graham Connell and Liam Cooper earn kudos for their project on glaciers

ADVERTISEMENTS

Two Neil Armstrong Middle School eighth-graders, Graham Connell and Liam Cooper, earned a special award for their entry in the 2008 Intel Northwest Science Expo at Portland State University March 14.

For their project, titled “The Effect of Glacier Melting on the Position and Flow Rate of the Gulf Stream,” the students garnered the Outstanding Forest Science Project award.

“I guess (the judge) just took a shine to their project,” said Neil Armstrong science teacher Paul Burnett.

It was the first time students from the Forest Grove School District had entered the expo, said Beth Wilbur, TAG facilitator and a teacher on special assignment at Neil Armstrong.

Most of the students who exhibited at the event attend private schools.

“I’d like to see more of our kids there in the future – it’s really worthwhile,” said Burnett, who spent 30 to 40 hours working with Connell and Cooper.

Re: Neil Armstrong eighth-graders win special award at Intel science expo

I wonder why this is the first time any student for Forest Grove School District has participated in the Intel Science Fair. I have a friend who teaches in Hillsboro who tells me that they participate. And I am sure Beaverton and other schools do to.

I don't agree that most of the schools participating are from private schools.Look at the results. Both Best of Fair for high school went to kids at public high schools and half of the high school ISEF finalist were from public schools.

And 7 if the 10 scholarships were awarded to public high school students. Very few of the high schools category awards went to private schools - they are mostly public school kids. So Public schools were very well represented just no Forest Grove schools. Obviously the News Times did not make any effort to do their research before printing this article.

So I think the statement that "Most of the students who exhibited at the event are from private schools" is absolutely NOT TRUE and added to the article to hide the fact that the Forest Grove School District gives poor attention to science and science fairs. In other school districts kids are introduced to the scientific method in elementary school. In Forest Grove they get it in 7th grade / maybe 6th if they get the right teacher.

Kudos to those kids. They are the first in Forest Grove to go to the Intel Science Fair. It must have taken a lot of extra work and initiative.

I was one of the Intel NWSE Middle School judges again this year. I was very happy to see a project from NAMS. I live here is FG and would like to see more projects from the area. Gaston/Yamhill also has a nice couple projects in the fair this year. I hope this is a trend for both schools. Good job.
