ADVERTISEMENTS

Police fatally shot a man Saturday afternoon in a hail of gun fire after he led them on a high-speed chase through Cornelius following a shooting altercation in Hillsboro.

Late Saturday night, the suspect was identified as 28-year-old Shawn Schumacher of Hillsboro.

After the incident, a search of Schumacher’s Hillsboro home in the 1000 block of Southeast Nazomi Avenue turned up evidence of a mescaline lab. Mescaline is a powerful hallucinogen created from the Peyote cactus.

Toxicology tests were planned Sunday to determine if Schumacher was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident.

Police say Schumacher was driving his 1997 Honda Civic erratically and shooting at other cars at around 1:30 p.m near the intersection of 10th and Oak streets in Hillsboro.
