An elderly Gaston-area resident awoke in time to flee her house fire in the pre-dawn hours last Friday morning.
The single-family rental home on SW Noblitt Place in the Laurelwood area was fully ablaze when crews from the Gaston Rural Fire District arrived at 5:47 a.m. on Nov. 27. The crew of 20 contained the fire in about seven minutes.
The Oregon Chapter of the American Red Cross reported that the woman was taken in by family members. Red Cross officials said they were helping the woman obtain replacement medications and had offered trauma counseling.
Gaston fire officials say the the fire, which destroyed the house and contents, was caused by an overloaded electrical circuit.
