ADVERTISEMENTS
As a fellow member of the City of Forest Grove Budget Committee, I read Jonathan Kipp’s comments about the budget process for the city (“A role model, not a rubber stamp,” News-Times, June 23, 2010).
My first response to Jonathan would be, ‘Welcome to the world of public service.”
While rewarding, it is very hard work and requires personal sacrifices that are a natural part of civic engagement.
It can be a continual challenge to keep informed, current and involved in the ever-changing world of local government, but well-worth the commitment when you are able to see the impact a single individual can make for the community.
My colleagues and I have donated thousands of hours and have had to spend many evenings away from home, family and personal events to fulfill our commitment to our community.
But this is part of the commitment we make to Forest Grove, and we are glad to serve! Perhaps, this is not the right time for Jonathan to divide his priorities between family and serving the community.
In his article, Jonathan mentioned his concern about not funding more economic development activities and a need to combat gang activities.
While I agree with him on both accounts, Jonathan did not provide supportive evidence of his statement or even debate his position with the budget committee.
Had these been major items of concern for Jonathan he could have spoken up, argued his position with facts, or made a motion to support either of these items during the budget process. I am not inclined to randomly “throw” money at issues without full and complete exchange of ideas.
