Thomas Holce Tennis Courts are (finally) ready for Pacific students
The days of shuttling to Beaverton for practices and games are over for Pacific University’s tennis teams.
After a season without a home facility in Forest Grove, the Thomas Holce Tennis Courts are open and ready for action.
The million-dollar complex, located on the corner of Cedar Street and University Avenue, features six lighted courts, three of which are covered. It will serve not only as home courts for the tennis programs, but also as a recreational facility for faculty, students and staff.
The facility is named for Pacific senior trustee Thomas Holce, who provided funds for previous courts built in the mid 1980s along Main Street, just south of Lincoln Park.
Those were demolished in 2007 to make room for Gilbert Hall.
Construction of the new facility began in December 2008 with a goal of opening the new courts on April 1, in time for the team to use them for at least part of the spring season.
But, according to Blake Timm, Pacific’s sports information director, the snowy December and an unusually wet spring delayed the facility’s opening until June.
Coach Brian Jackson said there was some disappoint with the delay, which meant that for all of last season the tennis teams had to be shuttled in buses to the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District’s tennis center for practices and home games.
